How the Spinal Gallant Reflex Affects Development
Introduction:
At Baby College, we love helping parents uncover the fascinating science behind their little one’s development. This week for Reflexes Week, we’re revealing the surprising link between two seemingly unrelated challenges: difficulty sitting still and bedwetting — both of which can be connected to one early reflex called the Spinal Gallant Reflex.
What is the Spinal Gallant Reflex?
The Spinal Gallant Reflex is a natural, automatic reaction where touching either side of a baby’s lower back causes them to arch or wriggle their hips. This reflex helps babies during birth and later supports important milestones like crawling.
When Should It Disappear?
By around 9–12 months of age, this reflex should naturally integrate as the brain and nervous system mature. But sometimes, it stays active for longer, and that can cause a few difficulties for young children.
Challenges Linked to a Persistent Spinal Gallant Reflex:
-
Sitting still: Children might find it uncomfortable to sit in a chair, often wriggling or fidgeting without knowing why.
-
Bedwetting: An active Spinal Gallant can cause involuntary bladder stimulation during sleep, making night-time dryness difficult to achieve.
-
Sensory sensitivity: Some children dislike having their lower back touched or feel easily irritated by waistbands or clothing seams.
What Can Help?
Gentle movement activities that support brain and body coordination — just like we do in Baby College classes — can help. Simple, playful exercises aimed at integrating reflexes, alongside a calm and patient approach, are key.
At Baby College, we build activities into our baby classes near you that nurture natural development and help your little one thrive, giving you peace of mind and confidence too.
